March 2026 Pastoral Message
As we move into March, I wonder how your Lenten journey is unfolding?
Lent often begins with clear intentions. We resolve to fast from something, to pray more intentionally, to give more generously, or to simplify our lives. Yet a few weeks in, enthusiasm can waver. If that has been your experience, you are not alone. The Lenten journey has never been about spiritual perfection. It is about returning – again and again – to God.
In Scripture, Lent echoes Jesus’ forty days in the wilderness (Matthew 4). Led by the Spirit, he faced hunger, temptation and testing. Fasting in the Bible is not about self-denial for its own sake; it is about dependence. When Jesus says, “One does not live by bread alone,” he reminds us that our deepest sustenance is found in God. Lent gently asks: what are we relying on? What might God be reshaping in us? It is a journey through wilderness, yes — but always towards Easter light.
You may have seen that we have recently launched St Peter’s Powick Unlocked. If you are on Facebook or Instagram, do take a look at the videos and share them. In one, I found myself racing a Minion — and I’m pleased to report that I won! In another, I was also tasting pancakes lovingly crafted by our Powick Pre-School tots. Cranberry and peanut butter turns out to be a surprisingly excellent combination. But behind the fun is something serious and hopeful. St Peter’s Church, Powick may sit on the geographical edge of the village, but it’s calling is firmly rooted at the heart of our community. For centuries it has held our stories — baptisms and weddings, grief and gratitude, quiet prayer and great celebration. That message is similar for each of our churches – from Guarlford and Madresfield to Christ Church (celebrating its 150yr birthday this year) and Callow End.
Like many parish churches, we face the challenge of sustainability. Caring for old or ancient buildings and sustaining vibrant ministry requires the support of the whole community. Lent asks searching questions about what we value. “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). Supporting the church, any of them — in prayer, in giving, in time and encouragement — is part of our shared pilgrimage.
Looking ahead, we would love you to join us for our Mothering Sunday services at 11am at Christ Church and at Powick on the 15th March 2026 — a joyful moment in the midst of Lent to give thanks for those who have nurtured us in faith and love.
